Picking the Right Contractor

Not all of us know about home remodeling. That’s why it’s important to hire someone you trust to build that deck or install new vinyl windows. With YouTube, many of us can tackle DIY projects a bit easier, but let’s face it: not everyone has the do-it-yourself skills required to get the job done on time and within budget.

It’s hard to work full time and then spend your weekends building the patio of your dreams! If you have decided to spruce up your home and need a contractor, Butler Home Improvement has suggestions for making the right decision when hiring someone to get the job done right.

First, ask friends and family which contractor they used to build that beautiful new sunroom. Don’t stop there! Make sure the contractor they hired is a member of the Home Builders Association (HBA). Once you’ve narrowed down a list to 3-4 contractors that specialize in the project you desire, call them and ask questions. Ask about references, typical project sizes, financing and insurance. Did you get a good feeling about one contractor in particular? Ask them to visit in person to go over the job.

After interviewing the contractors, visiting with several to compare notes, it can be very useful to call a previous customer to ask questions or even visit a job site “in action”. Are the workers courteous, focused? Is the work site organized and tasks seem to be operating smoothly? Often times, our gut instincts tell us which contractor we can rely on and which one we should disregard. Once the plans for the project are in place and you have several bids, it’s time to decide. When making your decision, don’t rely on price alone. It’s important to set a payment schedule, get the job and timeline in writing and decide on the overall experience you had with the contracting company. Why? Because for the next several weeks that company will be in your home working to create the vision of your dreams.
